Regional Disaster Ecosystem 101 for Nonprofits
Know the system. Know your role. Strengthen the response.
A stronger nonprofit sector makes a stronger disaster system. The Regional Disaster Ecosystem 101 (RDE 101) workshop gives nonprofit professionals the knowledge, connections, and shared language they need to understand their role in the Greater Houston Region's disaster ecosystem.
The workshop is offered multiple times per year. It's not necessary to attend more than one, unless you want a refresher!
Workshop Description
Disaster capacity building strengthens regional resilience, yet most nonprofits have limited time and resources for disaster readiness, and disaster response may not be their primary mission. Still, every nonprofit has a role to play, from providing essential services and supporting recovery to caring for colleagues, families, and neighbors.
Beginning in 2027, United Way of Greater Houston will offer the Regional Disaster Ecosystem 101 workshop three times per year at no cost to nonprofit professionals. The in-person workshop builds a shared foundation of knowledge about the systems, partners, structures, timelines, and terminology shaping disaster preparedness, response, and recovery across Greater Houston.
By creating a common framework and shared language, the workshop strengthens nonprofits' collective capacity to respond together, helping professionals communicate clearly, navigate multiple disaster systems, identify their role, and connect with the right partners for a more coordinated, efficient, and impactful disaster response and recovery.
Attendees don't need to become disaster experts! They will leave knowing:
- How the system works.
- Where their organization fits.
- Who the key players are.
- What the common language means.
- And where to go next.
